Transportation gains 16.6k jobs in June

The transportation industry gained 16,600 jobs in June, rising to a total of 4,618,500 employed workers, according to statistics released Friday by the Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

In comparison, overall employment in the U.S. increased by 288,000 jobs in June while the unemployment rate fell by 0.2 percent to 6.1 percent.

The couriers and messengers sector of transportation experienced the highest number of gains, growing from 563,000 jobs in May to 568,500 jobs in June — an increase of 5,500 jobs.

The scenic and sightseeing sector of transportation saw the only losses, declining by 800 jobs. Employment in this sector dropped from 30,100 jobs in May to 29,300 jobs in June.
