The competition, sponsored by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), AAA and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, recognizes transportation projects in three main categories: “Ahead of Schedule,” “Under Budget” and “Best Use of Innovation.” The projects were also ranked by size: small category (projects that cost less than $25 million), medium category (projects costing between $25-$200 million) and large category (projects that cost more than $200 million).
Nine transportation projects were nominated.
The following projects received awards:
U.S. 95, Sand Creek Byway project: Idaho Transportation Department (IDT) – Ahead of Schedule category, medium
I-40 Crosstown project: Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) – Ahead of Schedule category, large
Dumbarton Toll Bridge Seismic Retrofit project: California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) – Under Budget category, medium
Nogales Mariposa Port of Entry project: Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) – Best Use of Innovation category, small
MRC Railroad Rehabilitation project: South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) – Best Use of Innovation category, medium
I-15 Corridor Expansion project: Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) – Best Use of Innovation category, large
The winners in the mid American region were announced last month. Winners in the southern region will be announced later this summer.
The 10 projects with the highest overall scores will compete for the Grand Prize and People’s Choice Award. A panel of transportation experts will choose the Grand Prize winner, while the People’s Choice Award will go to the transportation project that receives the most online votes from the public.
Online voting begins September 4. Grand Prize and People’s Choice Award winners will be announced at the AASHTO Annual Meeting in Denver in October.
