The Iowa Transportation Commission on June 8 approved a five-year state highway program that includes $110 million to widen Interstate Highway 35 in West Des Moines from four lanes to six lanes, the Des Moines Register (Iowa) reports.
The Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) plans to spend $2.3 billion in state and federal money between 2011and 2015 on hundreds of road projects statewide, state officials said, according to the report.
The primary goal is safety, maintenance and preservation of the state’s existing road system, say DOT officials.
During the next five years, about $1.2 billion will be targeted for preservation and enhanced safety features, according to the newspaper report.
