00_INFR_ATAlogo_659x439pxFive transportation projects have won awards in the sixth annual southern regional America’s Transportation Awards competition.

The competition, sponsored by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), AAA and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, recognizes transportation projects in three main categories: “Ahead of Schedule,” “Under Budget” and “Best Use of Innovation.” The projects were also ranked by size: small category (projects that cost less than $25 million), medium category (projects costing between $25-$200 million) and large category (projects that cost  more than $200 million).

Seven transportation projects were nominated.

The following projects received awards:

  • I-285 & Ashford Dunwoody Divergent Diamond Interchange project: Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) – Ahead of Schedule category, small

  • State Route 9-Mississippi’s Road to Toyota project: Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) – Ahead of Schedule category, medium

  • I-24 Bridges Rehabilitation project: Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) – Innovation category, small

  • Dixie Highway Flyover project: Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) – Best Use of Innovation category, medium

  • Triangle Expressway project: Utah Department of Transportation (NCDOT) – Best Use of Innovation category, large

The winners in the mid American region were announced last month, and winners in the western region were announced earlier this month.

The 10 projects with the highest overall scores will compete for the Grand Prize and People’s Choice Award. A panel of transportation experts will choose the Grand Prize winner, while the People’s Choice Award will go to the transportation project that receives the most online votes from the public.

Online voting begins September 4. Grand Prize and People’s Choice Award winners will be announced at the AASHTO Annual Meeting in Denver in October.
