By Tina Grady Barbaccia

Redesigned sweeper offers chassis choice

Elgin Sweeper has introduced a new Road Wizard mechanical sweeper featuring an improved design and a choice of chassis – Freightliner, UD, International, conventional or cabover. The new design features improved styling; an improved spray system water pump; more efficient hydraulics; a more robust sweeper, lift and hopper frame; and improved service access. The sweeper is powered by a liquid-cooled, low-emission

interim Tier 4 engine that provides variable control over sweeper speeds with no effect on truck speed. The sweeper also features new water tank, hopper and elevator designs.

Blow gun blows away construction debris

The Coilhose Cannon extreme high volume blow gun was specifically developed forremoval of asphalt, stone, concrete, scrap metal, rock and any other large pieces of debris typically found around heavy-duty construction sites, road/railroad maintenance work areas, sewer excavations and bridge repair locations. The Cannon is a safe and more efficient alternative to the “black pipe and ball valve” method for blowing away large chunks of debris, the manufacturer says. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) specially-engineered safety nozzle delivers a concentrated force of air to a specific area so that the debris can be directed toward the collection area. A “power assist” trigger minimizes actuation force and further helps control debris removal and cleanup. Safety extensions that are 24 inches and 48 inches make it easy to reach areas typically hard to access.

Maximized visibility among improvements

Roadtec’s 700-horsepower soil stabilizer/reclaimer has undergone a transformation during the past year. Compared to the first 2007 prototype, the current SX-7 looks very different. The changes in the body of the machine are mostly related to maximizing visibility. Visibility can be tricky with any large construction machine, but the manufacturer has redesigned the front and rear body of the machine so that visibility is dramatically improved. The cab is optional and can slide right or left, past the frame of the machine. With the SX-7, water and emulsion are handled by one system. Any single nozzle or set of nozzles in the spray bar can be turned off individually to precisely control how much liquid material is put down. The new Roadnet central control and diagnostic system provides operator feedback on virtually every function of the machine. Additionally, troubleshooting screens for all systems can be accessed with the touch of a button. With its variable volume cutter, the drum can be moved up or down in the housing on the fly. To create more mixing space, the drum down is moved down. If sizing of the material is critical, the drum can be moved up closer to the housing for the desired result.

Wireless monitoring compact excavator

The new PC78US-8 compact hydraulic excavator from Komatsu America Corp. features a spacious operator’s compartment, 7-inch color multifunction monitor, Komtrax wireless machine monitoring system sending machine operating information to a secure website, minimum radius design, and a low-emission Komatsu engine. Data such as operating hours, machine location, maintenance notifications, out-of-area notifications, machine utilization, and residual fuel levels are features that are relayed to the web application for analysis. The hydraulic excavator gets it power from a direct-injection EPA Interim Tier 4 Komatsu SAA4D95LE-5 engine with 55 net horsepower. The PC78US-8 has an operating weight of 16,240 pounds and features a maximum digging height of 24 feet, 11 inches, a maximum digging depth of 15 feet, 5 inches, an arm crowd force of 7,760 pounds and a bucket breakout force of 13,780 pounds.

Construction layout software

Topcon Positioning Systems has introduced Topcon Layout and LayoutMaster, an advanced software solution for construction layout. The technology is designed to assist a contractor or builder with nearly any type of construction staking and layout application, regardless of terrain, regardless of weather, regardless of jobsite restrictions. The foundation of this new solution is the complete integration with Topcon’s industry-leading instrument and field data collection technology, providing complete input/output integration capabilities.

Compact trencher with heavy-duty oscillating tracks

The new RT24 compact trencher from Ditch Witch is a fully-hydrostatic, 22.3-horsepower (16.5 kW) trencher featuring heavy-duty oscillating tracks that improve stability and traction on rough and uneven terrain, and a Roto Witch boring attachment for installing utilities beneath driveways, sidewalks and other surface improvements with minimal turf disturbance. The compact trencher is designed with more weight on the digging chain, so it can put more product in the ground faster, and its trenching capacities of 48 inches deep and eight inches wide enable a contractor to install a wide variety of utilities and irrigation systems. The RT24’s chain speed also can be adjusted by substituting a 10-tooth sprocket for the standard 12-tooth. For added stability and traction, the RT24 can be equipped with heavy-duty tracks that “walk” or oscillate 12 degrees. A special trail wheel that supports the oscillating tracks helps reduce break-over and increase stability over uneven and rough terrain.

By Tina Grady Barbaccia

A new addition, the biggest in the series

Kubota introduces the 5-ton U55 tight tail swing compact excavator, the manufacturer’s largest model in its U-Series of compact excavators. With a medium-length arm that enhances arm crowd force, a wide doorway and plenty of operator space, the U55 now replaces Kubota’s popular KX161‑3 compact excavator. A new, load-sensing hydraulic system employs a combination of closed and open center controls to ensure strong digging forces and minimize “slow down” during travel when using attachments. The advanced load-sensing system provides optimum oil flow to each cylinder for smooth multifunction operation and enhanced fuel economy. Auto‑downshift travel motors smooth transitions through turns, and the optional hydraulic angle blade improves backfilling efficiency.

Turbocharged and certified off-highway engines for Interim Tier 4

The PowerTech PVX 9.0L and PowerTech PSX 9.0L engine models from John Deere Power Systems (JDPS) are the first of the company’s off-highway 75-hp and above engines to be certified by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and European Union (EU) as compliant with the Interim Tier 4 and Stage III B regulations. The engines use a PowerTech Plus Tier 3/Stage III A in-line, six-cylinder engine platform — which includes cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) for NOx control — and an exhaust filter for reducing particulate matter (PM). These engines will feature full-authority electronic controls, a four-valve cylinder head, a high-pressure fuel system, turbocharging and an air-to-air aftercooling system. The engines feature cooled EGR and variable geometry turbocharger (VGT) technologies to help maintain fuel-economy levels similar to those achieved with the manufacturer’s Tier 3/Stage III A engines.

New cab. More power. And a three-stage, dual-mode system

Komatsu America Corp. has introduced its new GD655-5 motor grader, powered by an EPA Tier 3 emission-certified Komatsu SAA6D107E-1 engine. With an increased maximum horsepower of 218 and an increased standard configuration weight of 35,351 pounds, the GD655-5 is entering the largest grader segment in North America. The new powertrain design positions the engine at the rear of the machine. This placement, along with the increased weight on the front axle, provides better control. The engine technology provides a three-stage, dual-mode system that produces higher power with reduced fuel consumption and offers three levels of power from first through eighth gear — a 20-percent fuel consumption savings when compared to the previous model. The machine’s newly-designed cab (patent pending) has a hexangular shape that eliminates the front corner pillars, which allows for greater visibility.

Stationary and self-erect storage works with competitive models

Asphalt Drum Mixers, Inc. offers stationary and self-erect asphalt storage silos, which are compatible with both its own and similar competitive models of asphalt plants. Storage silos receive freshly mixed asphalt from a conveyor and keep it at a constant temperature until it is discharged. The stationary and self-erect designs allow them to be used in various asphalt plant configurations, and multiple capacity options are available to accommodate the output of any operation. The capacity of ADM’s self-erect silos ranges from 30 to 75 tons, and stationary silo models hold between 100 and 300 tons of asphalt mix. All models are equipped with alarms to alert operators when asphalt levels are high, and they feature a fiberglass blanket insulation to provide superior heat retention while the mixture is stored. Optional oil or electric heating systems are available to ensure asphalt is kept at the desired temperature.

Operating data sent wirelessly

Komatsu America Corp.’s new PC160LC-8 hydraulic excavator is equipped with the latest Komtrax technology (Level 3), which sends machine operating information to a secure Website using wireless technology. Data such as operating hours, location, cautions and maintenance alerts are relayed to the web application for analysis. The machine has an operating weight of 36,770 to 37,740 pounds, is powered by a Komatsu SAA4D107E-1 engine. The electronically controlled HPCR (High-Pressure Common Rail) fuel injection system is EPA Tier 3 emissions certified. Special features of the new PC160LC-8 include a new large multi-color monitor and Komatsu’s EMMS (Equipment Management Monitoring System). EMMS continually monitors all critical excavator systems; tracks the preventative maintenance schedule, provides on-board tracking, and advises current required maintenance; and provides error codes and troubleshooting assistance to mechanics in order to minimize diagnosis and repair time.

Bright roll-up roadside signs for proper warning

American Safety Vest (ASV) is now offering a new series of bright orange vinyl roll-up signs for roadside use. The heavyweight, 15-ounce mesh signs are available from the American Safety Vest website (http://www.americansafetyvest.com) All of the signs are fluorescent. They can be either 36 or 48 inches square, fitting most standard stands for roll-up signs. They can carry standard or custom legends, including: Men Working, Flagger Ahead, Road Work Ahead, Road Closed Ahead, Left Lane Closed Ahead, and Right lane Closed Ahead.

Need to align barriers? No problem

The Kenco Barrier Lift can be used on any concrete median barriers, sound walls, curbing and piling, and also works well for aligning barriers that have already been placed. The barrier lift is ready for operation by using a lifting sling such as the Kenco RigMAX attached to any type or model of machine with lifting capabilities. Elastomer pads provide superior performance even in wet weather. All models are available with optional self-aligning guides. The guides extend down from one set of the pads to allow the lifter to align itself with the barrier wall whenever the lifter is lowered into position. This optional feature can also be purchased separately to attach to earlier models of the Kenco barrier lift. Lifting capacities are available from 1,500 to 30,000 pounds.

Liquid asphalt for wet or dry conditions

Tri-Products LLC has introduced duraPATCH, a specially-designed liquid asphalt form-patch material. The unique asphalt formula’s coating and adhesion properties allow for application in wet or dry conditions. The asphalt formulation has been tested to meet ASTM Standards to maintain the qualities needed for optimal performance. The duraPATCH has been formulated to provide workability during cold winter months, and to withstand the stress and strain of traffic abuse.

Finn Corporation introduces its TRU-Mulch line, consisting of six mulches specially designed to meet the demands of various erosion control and hydroseeding projects. The wood fibers used throughout the line originate from virgin poplar and pine wood chips from forests of the eastern United States. All products in the line undergo an advanced “double refining” process that uses high-pressure steam to create fiber from wood chips. A non-toxic green dye is also added to the fibers to increase visibility during application and to enhance aesthetic appeal.

The TRU-Wood product in the line provides an effective solution for basic erosion control and hydroseeding needs. The mulch is consistent in fiber size and texture to ensure maximum performance. It can be used on slopes up to 30 feet long with a horizontal length to vertical rise ratio of 3:1 or less.

20-percent more duty cycles on a single charge

JLG Industries, Inc., an Oshkosh Corp. company, has new and improved features on its JLG E300 series boom lift models. Through improved hydraulic efficiencies, the E300 provides more than 20 percent more duty cycles, which means an operator can drive 6.6 miles and complete 175 lift cycles on a single charge. The new 305 amp-hour batteries provide an 18-percent improvement in recharging time and deliver a lower replacement cost for equipment owners. Other E300 product improvements include the following: improved break-over clearance, smoother swing function, and a new multi-digital indicator that displays key information including: battery life, machine hours and fault codes.

A stronger transport rack, 30-percent lighter weight

AlturnaMats Turn-a-Racks, used for storage and transport, are stronger than before. The Turn-a-Rack has been restructured using round steel instead of the square. This enables the rack to be lighter in weight yet more durable in strength. The racks are 30 percent lighter, which saves in freight costs. The racks are less apt to bend with the round steel and also with closed ends instead of the open ended square racks. The racks are part of the MatPak (complete package) or may be purchased separately to go along with the AlturnaMats ground protection mats.

New products to solve bird bridge pest problems

Bird-B-Gone, Inc. has published an extensive new catalog for commercial, industrial, and residential use. The new full-color 49-page catalog includes a series of innovative new products including the new “Avian-Plus” Bird Hazing System. The catalog features more than 100 products to help solve virtually any type of pest bird problem.

Diesel Exhaust Fluid meets diesel vehicle compliance

Warren Oil Company, Inc. has introduced Lubriguard SkyBlue DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) to the market to meet the need of diesel vehicles to comply with 2010 Environmental Protection Agency standards for diesel emissions. DEF is stored in a supplementary tank on the vehicle. The dosage, approximately 2 percent of fuel consumption, is calculated precisely by the vehicle’s electronic system and injected into the exhaust duct. DEF is a 32.5 percent aqueous urea solution and is guaranteed by compliance to global quality standards DIN 70070 and ISO 22241.It is available in the following containers: four 1-gallon, two 2.5-gallon, and 55-gallon drums; 330-gallon totes; and bulk (special handling is required).

John Deere Power Systems (JDPS) has partnered with Crown Equipment to develop and produce a 2.4L liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) industrial engine for the new Crown C-5 Series forklift. The new engine was designed specifically to power material handling equipment in demanding applications.

Bucket works one tooth at a time

Leading Edge Attachments, Inc., introduces the patent-pending STAG Bucket, a high penetration bucket utilizing “staggered tooth” technology. It is designed for excavators, allowing the operator to easily dig compacted soils, coral, shale, caliche, stratified materials, shot rock or frozen ground with higher concentrated breakout force. The new bucket is priced below the company’s Multi-Ripper Bucket. The STAG bucket design allows the operator to focus the excavator’s full breakout force on one tooth at a time because the front leading edge is angled. Creating flat trench bottoms is easy with this new bucket also because the teeth are on the same plane, similar to a conventional bucket.

FHWA yes to guardrail change

The new specially designed 5- pound-foot Nu-Guard 27 Barrier System posts manufactured by Nucor Steel Marion, Inc. have been accepted by the Federal Highway Administration for use in lieu of W6 by 9 wood or steel I-beam posts when repairing sections within existing runs of 27-inch-high W-beam guardrails.

Cemen Tech onsite mix/dispense

Cemen Tech’s new MCD10-150 Mobile concrete dispenser produces 60 yards of high-quality concrete per hour and can hold up to 10 cubic yards of materials. The volumetric mixer carries the materials necessary for concrete production in separate bins and they are measured out at the job site where the concrete is produced in the machine’s exclusive pump master mix auger. Mix designs can also be changed per specifications with a simple and quick resetting of the aggregate bin gates.

N.M. OKs gravity retaining walls

New Mexico’s Department of Transportation has approved the use of Redi-Rock gravity retaining walls in DOT projects. The retaining walls allow engineers to design walls up to 24 feet high without geogrid or reinforcement due to the massive weight of each block. The DOT’s approval allows the walls that look like natural stone to be built up to 12-foot tall in DOT applications. The structural walls consist of individual one-ton blocks that interlock to create structural walls that require no mortar or pins.

Topcon’s next generation is here

Topcon Positioning Systems (TPS) has introduced the FC-250, the next generation field controller with an operating system power of Windows Mobile Version 6.5.

The PC performance with 806MHz processor and 256MB SDRAM is designed to significantly speed up data collection in the field. The FC-250 also has a built-in Bluetooth modem and wireless LAN capability as standard features. Topcon also has released SurveyMaster Lite, a new CAD-based desktop application for surveying and job site information editing and plotting. It allows users to manage data from raw format all the way through to a finished plot. Survey calculations can be completed and uploaded to the field collector for stakeout and field verification.

Trimble has updated its portfolio of mapping and GIS field and office software products, enhancements that focus on impoved Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) accuracy for data collection. The DeltaPhase technology, results from receivers such as the GeoXT handheld and GPS Pathfinder ProX show 50-centimeter accuracy in good environments and improved yield under canopy and in multi-path prone areas. Results for the Juno series handhelds with post-processed accuracy are now in the 1- to 3- meter range. The company also has introduced a new version of its Trimble 4D Control software that combines GNSS and optical technologies for real-time deformation monitoring applications.

It also features quick on-site changes to left or right side pouring and Eco mode. Its maximum weight is 39,600 lb. (18,000 kg).

The 1448 Plus and 1648 Plus Gehl Power Box Asphalt Pavers feature fully-extendable screed extensions. A full-floating, adjustable and vibratory 8-foot, 13-inch screed is standard on both Power Box models. Crown, invert and pitch adjustments are provided through screw-type jacks located at the center and ends of the main screed assembly. To heat the screed, the 1648 Plus uses a propane burner system. By preheating the screed, asphalt is prevented from bonding to the screed’s wear plate and scoring mat finish. The 1448 Plus uses the engine exhaust to heat the screed with propane-heated screed as optional.

The Volvo PF6160 and PF6170 wheel-mounted pavers are part of the PF6000-Series highway-class asphalt paver line that combines the legacy of Blaw-Knox with the latest technology. A patented level-load suspension design uses the two-drive wheels and the center of the bogie hydraulic system to provide consistent and even ground contact for stability. Both come standard with the two-wheel front-wheel assist; however, the PF6170 can be configured with an optional four-wheel front-wheel assist for all-wheel-drive capability.

The M1E self-propelled continuous slurry seal and micro surfacing paver from Bergkamp Inc. features the innovative EMCAD (Electronic Mix Control and Diagnostic). The system ties material ratios of aggregate, asphalt emulsion, water, additive and fines together with an electronic signal and automatically maintains the ratios with feedback loops. It also electronically self-diagnoses control system or engine problems and displays an error code.

The redesigned BF814 and BF815 pavers from Bomag now feature a low-profile engine hood for improved operator visibility. Both the engine and hood have been lowered six inches to give the operator a better view of both sides of the machine.

Built with UNIMAT 2 screed assemblies, the BF814 and BF815 offer 8- to 14-foot and 8- to 15-foot standard paving widths, respectively. They can maintain paving speeds up to 180 feet per minute and travel speeds up to 360 feet per minute.

The Bomag BF6615 self-propelled asphalt paver weighs in at more than 22,000 pounds and features a 99-horsepower Cummins water-cooled, turbocharged diesel engine. The engine’s Ecomode feature automatically lowering rpm’s during stops, which saves fuel and reduces noise. The new design, UNIMAT 2 full-width floating screed has a standard 8- to 15-foot paving width. The screed is electrically heated, eliminating the need to change propane bottles in the middle of a large project. Dual vibrators provide 2,500 vibrations per minute.

Roadtec highway class paver models are now available with an optional temperature-sensing bar. Developed by MOBA, the device measures the temperatures of the entire mat width in real time and records that data, along with the corresponding GPS coordinates. The paver operator is able to see the temperature information on a screen, and has the ability to control the paving process better by spotting potential problem spots and taking corrective action. The company offers 8- and 10-foot pavers in tire or rubber track versions.

Calder Brothers Corporation has announced the availability of thermostatic control, electric heat on the company’s high-end Silver-16 screed. The Mauldin 1750-C paver now offers two thermostatically-controlled heating options; propane or electric. By entering the “auto” mode at the start of the day, the screed is assured to be at the proper paving temperature when it is placed on the mat.

Terex Roadbuilding’s CR662RM RoadMix material transfer vehicle and paver features a variable-pitch in-hopper auger design that dramatically increases material throughput. Pitch spacing – transitioning from 10 inches in the front to 11 inches and then to 12 inches the rear – channels material to the rear of the machine for faster truck unloading. The auger can exceed 500 tons per hour and reblends 100 percent of the material to combat both material and thermal segregation.

The Vision Series of asphalt pavers from Vögele America included the 10-ft. tracked Vision 5200-2 with HR 500-1E screed, the 8-ft. tracked Vision 5100-2, 10-ft. wheeled Vision 5203-2, and 8-ft. wheeled Vision 5103-2. All the models provide forward and all-around visibility without turning. The operator’s stations also swing out from both edges of the machine.

Avery Dennison Graphics and Reflective Products Division (GRPD) introduced at ATSSA the OmniCube, a full-cube reflective sheeting that provides higher reflectivity for road signage by returning about 60 percent of available light back to the driver. The precision-tiled cubes perform consistently with uniform reflectivity allowing sign fabricators to “nest” shapes and letters, without affecting the reflectivity of the sign. The reflective sheeting exceeds all requirements of ASTM D4956-09 for Type XI sheeting. Write 022 on Reader Service Card.

Cummins will unveil four engines ready for EPA Tier 4 Interim. Included will be the debut of the company’s next generation 4-cylinder QSB3.3 and QSB4.5 engines for compact equipment. Also brand new will be the QSX11.9 and QSX15 heavy-duty engines. Cummins will display the power plants complete from air intake to exhaust.

The compact 3.3-liter and 4.5-liter QSB engines extend across the 75-hp to 160-hp (56 kW to 119 kW) power range, which Cummins says lets OEMs standardize its 4-cylinder installations with common Tier 4 Interim engine architecture. The engines feature a scaled-down EGR system, the company’s compact equipment exhaust after treatment system, a variable flow turbocharger and space saving air cleaners.

The 11.9-liter and 15-liter engines cover a broad 300-hp to 600-hp (224kW to 447 kW) power band and share the same technology for Tier 4 Interim such as the company’s new XPI common-rail fuel system. A variable geometry turbocharger is able to continuously vary airflow boost to match engine rpm and load demands and a new

air cleaner includes an integrated sensor for monitoring temperature and pressure to ensure optimum flow.

Hamm will show its new HD+ range of 10 models of tandem rollers. The HD+ 90 (operating weight approx. 9 metric tons) and HD+ 110 (operating weight approx. 11 metric tons) articulated tandem rollers offer broad visibility thanks to their compact design and unusually large new XXL cab with a vaulted glass roof. The operating console with its display is never out of sight. It is permanently attached to and moves with the seat.

The newly designed articulated joint allows a superior weight distribution in relation to comparable tandem rollers, says the company. This results in increased directional stability and improved compaction quality, especially on bends and roundabouts. The offset during crab steering has almost doubled compared with the previous models in the HD series. Hamm offers a high-frequency version for the US market, where compaction is carried out at significantly higher speeds. The 9-metric-ton roller is also available in 2 models with separate roller drums – one for vibration, one for oscillation. During dynamic compacting work, the operator can use the front and rear roller drums at the same time but at different frequencies.

LiuGong will show its 888III large wheel loader which will be launched into the U.S. market later this year. The company will also present four upgraded excavators including a 36 metric tons model headed for America and a 12-metric ton dirt roller which will also be available in North America. No American-bound asphalt pavers are planned for this year but its possible we’ll see small models in the U.S. next year along with rollers.

Bomag will present new vibratory plates and new trench compactors including articulated and radio controlled models, both U.S. available. For the first time the company will send out two version of the plates, one for professional use and a simplified version headed for the rental market which will be easier for untrained hands to transport and operate. Expect Bomag to follow up with some other similarly split lines. Also expect a new small asphalt roller to hit the American market next year.

A new design for its small diesel engines will be shown by Kubota demonstrating a strategy of increasing fuel-burning efficiency with a new four-valve system. One result of this process is that after-treatment equipment has less work to do and so takes up less space.

From Vermeer comes the AXIS. The AXIS GB812 guided boring system comes with a laser guided system for accuracy in the trenchless installation of 10- to 14-inch (25.4- to 35.6 centimeter) pipe for on-grade water and sewer projects. The pit-launched system can install up to 350 feet (106.7 meters) of both rigid constructed, as well as fusible and restrained joint product pipe. Spoil is removed from the cutter head via a vacuum excavation system, eliminating the need to manually handle it within the pit.

Terex will present 50 products including new wheel loaders and mobile excavators. The company says its new TL130 is the “Titan” of its four high-performance loaders, “which are fitted with cutting edge hydrostatic traction technology as well as extremely sensitive high-performance hydraulics.” The completely revamped TW110 mobile excavator, a machine the company calls its flagship in this category, has been given a “futuristic makeover,” Terex says.

The multi-purpose Hauler Chassis concept will be launched by Volvo Construction. While the load body is a traditional ‘attachment’ for articulated haulers, several other effective hauling solutions can now be easily developed. Using E-Series articulated tractors, with a standard or extended frame as a base, bodybuilders can create a wide range of off-highway specials, such as hook lift, container hauler, concrete mixer, construction tractor, pipe carrier, wood chipper or timber transporter.

The Bergkamp all-in-one FP5 Flameless Pothole Patcher’s insulated 5.1-cubic-yard electric-heated hopper keeps asphalt pliable and at a constant temperature for extended periods. The truck-mounted unit’s electric heat system uses an onboard hydraulic-powered AC generator to warm the full-length, electric-heating elements to produce consistent material heating throughout the hopper and eliminate hot spots. The thermostat allows the temperature to be set to match the material being transported and can be plugged into an external power source. An optional swing auger system delivers asphalt material in a wide 8.7-foot swing that ranges from the driver’s side wheel track past the passengers side wheel track.

DuraPatcher boasts that its DuraMaxx pothole patcher is now a single-person operation for patching potholes and distressed pavement. The truck-mounted unit uses a patented design with cab-mounted controls that allow operators to patch using spray-injection technology from the truck cab. The patcher incorporates a seven-yard aggregate hopper box, a high volume blower and a heated emulsion tank. From the cab, the operator uses a joystick to position the boom to repair the distressed area. When not in use, the boom folds flush with the front bumper and does not obstruct the operator’s vision. The unit is powered independently from the truck engine and an aggregate feed system works solely by gravity and venturi effect to supply a wide range of aggregate sizes. The series sets itself apart from similar products with a new hose carrier to reduce operator fatigue. The three-section articulated boom keeps the hose low for better visibility while providing added support. It also provides protection in travel mode when wind buffeting can cause hose wear. The articulated boom is available for single or dual hose models. Metro’s Fume Guard uses an ignition system to burn off excess fumes generated from heating the sealant to optimum temperature. A kettle level-monitoring system also enables operators to keep accurate readings on melted sealant. Other standard features include a new quick start control system, auger assisted agitator assembly, high-intensity LED lighting and a heavy-duty tube frame. Write 42 on Reader Service Card.

Deere’s Tier 4 Ratings

John Deere Power Systems (JDPS) introduced its generator drive prime power Interim Tier 4 power ratings for diesel engines above 130 kW (174 hp) at POWER-GEN International in December in Las Vegas. Interim Tier 4 emissions regulations, which begin in 2011, apply to 130 kW (174 hp) and above diesel engines used in prime power applications, and require a 90 percent reduction in diesel particulates and a 50 percent reduction in nitrogen oxide (NOx) from previous Tier 3 requirements. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency only requires that emergency stationary gen-set engines meet Tier 3 emissions regulations.

Making the grade with accuracy

A new laser-based AccuGrade grading system for Caterpillar’s C-Series Skid-Steer Loaders, Multi-Terrain Loaders and Compact Track Loaders combines the capability of the Level Best Grading Box with the C-Series loader’s integral electro/hydraulic controls to create an automated grading system capable of extreme accuracy. The new system establishes flat or single-slope grades to within ± 0.25 inch (± 6.5 mm) without grade stakes, grade checkers and stake-setting surveyors. The system works with the loader’s auxiliary-hydraulic system and integral controls to automatically adjust the elevation of the grading-box blade, eliminating undercuts and overfills and assuring that expensive base materials are spread to exact specifications.

Easily mounts on truck

FlexAir rotary screw air compressors D185P2JD & D185P2CA models from Sullivan-Palatek are built with removable drawbar and wheels to easily mount on a truck. It’s offered with a John Deere or Caterpillar engine and comes standard with a containment frame with drain ports on all four corners, a flip-up towbar, and exterior fluid drains for the following diesel fuel, engine oil, engine coolant, and compressor oil. The also has gull-winged doors, side-by-side coolers for compressor and engine, and four-way forklift pockets.

Sending out a winter SOS

The new SOS liquid deicing product from EnviroTech Services allows the use of salt at temperatures not previously possible, according to the manufacturer. In addition, SOS was designed to reduce leaching in stockpiles, specifically in warm, high humidity situations such as salt treated in late summer and stockpiled until winter. The deicer can be applied to a stockpile in advance or as it is being delivered, since treating the entire stockpile prior to application eliminates the need for pre-wetting saddle tanks. It also increases the speed and effectiveness of salt, and penetration into ice and snow pack, and prevents the stockpile from freezing or “clumping.”

Visibility for safety

American Safety Vest’s new high-visibility fluorescent orange field markers can be used for a variety of applications, including construction zones. The markers are 11 inches long, weather-resistant and visible from a distance. They are attached to sturdy, slightly flexible 6-foot, fiberglass poles that can be easily inserted into and removed from mud, dirt, gravel or sand. The markers come in sets of four.

Rips asphalt like a ‘SHARC’

Leading Edge Attachments, Inc. now offers the 23 Series “Multi-Ripper Tooth” (MRT) designed for excavators and backhoes. Conventional twin tiger teeth have two points that help to rip rock; however, they are side by side so that when they come into contact with rock. The force is shared by the two points of MRT and are positioned using “SHARC” technology (“SHanks on an ARC”) that places the points at staggered positions along an arc that has a center approximately near the bucket/stick pivot point. This allows the tooth to rip out a relatively flat bottom while focusing the entire excavator breakout on one point at a time.

Bid List: Mowers and Mower Attachments

Mowing roadsides, overpasses, and bridge embankments can be difficult and dangerous. The Harper ATM162 Slope Mower from Harper Industries helps make this job an easier, safer, and more comfortable process. The automatic self-leveling tractor allows the operator to be safe and comfortable on slopes of up to 34 degrees. The ATM162 features a 13-foot cutting width and 99 horsepower Cummins engine to provide productivity on all types of terrain.

The line of commercial-duty spreader attachments from TurfEx, a product division of TrynEx International, is designed to mount on a multitude of service vehicles. The spreaders provide consistent, even distribution of anything from seed to fertilizer, including deicing and anti-icing agents for winter maintenance applications, according to the manufacturer. The mountable spreader line — constructed of lightweight, corrosion-resistant polyethylene — consists of six models, available as either electric or PTO driven with capacities of 3-, 7- or 12-cubic-feet.

The patented Wet Blade system from Diamond Mowers is a combination mower that allows for the selective application of growth regulators, herbicides and other water-based chemicals to vegetation by causing a minute amount of chemical to be immediately absorbed into the vascular system of a plant at the time of cut. The system is most effective on stem diameters 3 inches and smaller and has a maximum application rate of about 2.5 gallons of herbicide mixture per acre.

The Toro Company’s Z Master G3 zero-turning radius mowers have been redesigned with a low center of gravity, the result of a vertical shaft engine that sits lower in the chassis, a lower operator position and the 12-gallon fuel tank that is now located under the operator’s seat. The combination provides hillside stability and traction for better control and less “crabbing.” The design also incorporates unitized hydros. The new instrument panel on G3 models contains an electronic hour meter and allows operators to quickly assess the status of the mower, including fuel levels and battery voltage.

Available in four cutting widths, U.S. Mower’s Samurai Brush Flail can turn most excavators or backhoes into productive boom mowers. Designed for tough mowing jobs, the mower features Domex high-strength steel construction, universal bolt-on mount, reversible 2-pound offset mulching blades, replaceable AR400 skid shoes, direct drive motor, wire proof cutter shaft protectors and a powder coat finish. It also can safely cut and mulch small trees and brush.

The ST-180 Elite from Bush-Whacker, part of Hall Manufacturing, is a 15-foot, smooth-deck, flex-wing rotary cutter and the latest in a line of product introductions from the company. The cutter’s Bush-Whacker Special Deck includes a primary (bottom) deck of 3/16-inch steel that is welded to heavy-duty channel structures. The smooth top deck is made of 12-gauge steel and protects the inner support frame. The spindle gearbox, rated with 225 horsepower, makes the cutter ideal for highway, agricultural, commercial, and other applications where a heavy-duty, rugged mower is needed.

The Bradco line of Brush Cutters by Paladin Construction Group has features to maximize brush clearing speed and minimize power requirements. The brush cutters easily attach to most skid-steers and are designed to cut grasses, weeds, brush and trees up to four inches in diameter. High deck clearance, side discharge, flow control baffle and a smooth unobstructed deck improves performance by preventing debris build up. The rotation indicator notifies the operator of overload conditions. Internal relief built into the motor protects the drive system and provides fast, controlled shut down. A stump jumper is another added feature designed to allow the cutter to lift up over stumps and rocks, protecting the machine from damage that can be caused by hitting these obstructions.

APWA: Special product coverage from the 2009 American Public Works Association (APWA) International Public Works Congress and Exposition

The patent-pending Edge-N-Blow from Sweeperman is touted as “the fastest edging system in the world” by its manufacturer, with a front-mount edger that can be reversed to the other side in minutes and swivels 30 degrees, combined with a turbine blower. The system, introduced at the 2009 American Public Works Association (APWA) International Public Works Congress and Exposition in mid-September, features a 20-inch cutting blade, bucket clamps that accept any 2-inch receiver for other jobs, and edging speeds up to 12 mph.

VueWorks Inc. at APWA released VUEWorks 2009, an expanded version of its Web-based solution that enables municipalities, utilities and other organizations to track the condition, minimize failure risk, prioritize expenditures and service delivery of their physical assets. The scalable suite of software modules is a management solution that incorporates condition assessment, risk analysis, valuation, budget forecasting, and project cost estimating for managing any infrastructure asset through its lifetime. The solution enables roadway condition assessment and prioritization, including recording the severity and extents of pavement distresses comparable to ASTM standards. Pavement condition can be color-coded and linked in real time to GIS data. The real asset this system brings is determining what are the risks and consequences of failure, Alex von Swoboda of VueWorks tells Better Roads.

North American Salt Co. and Sifto Canada Co. unveiled an expanded lineup of deicing products at the APWA International Congress and Exposition. The new products include Thawrox, a solid, granular, treated salt; ArctiClear Gold, a proprietary line of salt brine additives; FreezGard, a liquid magnesium chloride products; and DustGard Dust Suppressant and Road Base Stabilizer, a high-performance magnesium chloride solution used for dust control on road surfaces and construction and other worksites.

Envista Corp. at APWA introduced the Envista 2009 Release 2 of its Web-based software for infrastructure project coordination. The map-based system facilitates the planning process for construction and maintenance work in and under roadways. The new version optimizes project timing and detects project conflicts among towns, cities, utilities and highway agencies. “Our application is trying to reduce street cuts in newly paved roads by enabling communication between the stakeholders,” Martha Bednarz of Envista tells Better Roads, adding that because it’s Web-based, it doesn’t reside on a server enabling several people to work together.” Users can track permits by status, applicant, applicant organization, type, location, date, and other variables. Email notifications and permit reports with embedded maps can be sent.

The new D3765-6 dozer from Komatsu American Corp. features 636 horsepower (gross), 610 horsespower (net) at 1,800 rpm. Powered by a Komatsu SAA6D170E-5 engine with an operating weight of 157,940 pounds, the crawler dozer meets all EPA Tier 3 and EU state 3A emissions requirements. Upgrades from its prior model, the D375A-5E0, include improved blade profile, a new multilingual LCD color monitor with self-diagnostic functions. An updated Full-U 28.8-cubic-yard blade allows for increased production without increasing blade width or reducing digging force. An “eco gauge” is displayed on the right side of the multi-monitor screen. There are also 16 new, standard mining specifications including high-mounted headlights; battery and starter isolator box; centralized grease points; and manual engine stop switches. Optional mining specifications include right and left hand platforms with handrails and HID work lights. A variable piston pump derived from the D475A-5EO hydraulic system replaces the previous tandem gear.

Bye bye dust, heavy and light

The new Hilti TE DRS-B Dust Removal System easily clips onto all recent Hilti demolition hammers and combihammers, with no screwdriver needed. Throughout the demolition process, the system captures both heavy and fine dust. An inner ring prevents the intake of large pieces of concrete or other materials that could block the system. A two-chamber
air-flushing system also not only collects dust from the working surface, but it also removes dust from the end of the chuck, helping to keep the tool clean.

Expands Crawler Loader Offering

Liebherr Construction Equipment has released its LR614 and LR 624 models, which joins the previously announced LR634. Powered by Tier 3 engines, the two new models increase Liebherr’s offering from 1.57-cubic-yard to 3.14-cubic-yard bucket capacities.
The 101-horsepower LR614 offers a compact machine for those dealing with tight operating quarters. The LR614 has a full-sized operator’s cab with standard AC and a 16,751-pound tipping load.
The LR624 replaces the LR622, offering significant upgrades, including a new operators cab that won a European design award. Cab upgrades a single-piece curved glass windshield offering visibility during the full bucket dig-dump cycle.
