A floating snow wing mast?

That’s Smart

If you’re plowing snow this winter, chances are the road you’re on is not perfectly contoured. In fact, it’s probably pretty much beat up – with dips, ruts and possibly breaks – topped off, of course, by snow- and ice-covered obstructions just prime for costly municipal insurance claims running rampant throughout North America. Responding with up to 13 inches of float instantly adjusted in the wing’s toe, the Smart Link rotational floating wing mast from Henderson Products provides conformance to varying road conditions, as well as the elimination of both toe dig and the binding associated with conventional mast/slides. According to the manufacturer, impact forces are reduced by as much as 70 percent over traditional front-wing mast configurations, which require additional bracing. Converting easy from existing wing systems, the Smart Link has a low-profile design providing full access to the engine compartment and a clear line of vision for the driver. A large access hole in the front makes maintenance easy. A locking pin secures the wing when not in use.

Caterpillar

Excavator range goes big on compacts

When the king of big yellow iron, Caterpillar, moved into the compact equipment market in the 1990s, it triumphed the future role of the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) as a full-range supplier. No longer were Caterpillar and other large OEMs willing to concede the compact market to niche players. Well, with its recent compact excavator product introduction, Caterpillar has one taken step further – a little step, that is. Three models ranging up to 2.7 metric tons in operating weight include Caterpillar’s foray into the “micro” market. Easily transported from site to site on a trailer behind a van or pickup truck, the 300.9D model weighs in at just 2,061 pounds – less than one metric ton – and has an overall width of only 28.7 inches for easy movement through a standard doorway. The 18.4-horsepower, diesel-powered excavator leverages a twin gear pump hydraulic system for maximum bucket breakout force of 2,000 pounds and stick breakout force of 1,011 pounds. Specifically to work with this model, suited to demolition contractors working in confined spaces, Caterpillar will be introducing a new H25 compact breaker. Maximum digging depth is 69.4 inches and maximum excavation radius is 121.7 inches. At the same time, Caterpillar introduced the 301.4C excavator model ranging 2,921-3,340 pounds in operating weight and the 302.7D CR maxing out at 5,886 pounds with a full cab. The latter is Caterpillar’s smallest compact radius excavator, offering zero tail swing when equipped without counterweight.

John Deere

Tractors built specially for scrapers

John Deere has unveiled three track models – the 9460RT, 9510RT, and 9560RT – as its new 9R/9RT Scraper Special Series Tractors. The new lineup also includes three wheeled models (9460R, 9510R, 9560R). The full line is equipped with a fuel-efficient, high-torque IT4 13.5L PowerTech PSX engine featuring 460 to 560 horsepower. The 9460RT, 9510RT, and 9560RT are equipped with the Durabuilt 5500 Series Scraper rubber track in a 30-inch width. The functions and features formerly located on the right-hand console were relocated to the redesigned CommandArm, including a new 7-inch color CommandCenter display. The CommandArm provides fingertip controls of key tractor functions, including throttle, transmission speed and direction, and selective control valves. Additional adjustments and configuration settings are made on the optional touch-screen capable GreenStar (GS3) CommandCenter display.

Caterpillar

Upgrades boost productivity, performance

New features on the Caterpillar D9T Track-Type Tractor include enhanced operator safety, comfort and convenience, while also refining performance and productivity. The machine is powered by a Cat C18 engine with ACERT Technology, rated at 410 horsepower with an operating weight of more than 110,000 pounds. A low-effort electronic dozer control handle gives the operator control of all dozer functions with one hand. An optional Automatic Ripper Control keeps the drawbar load constant and minimizes track slip. In addition, Automated Blade Assist uses blade-pitch presets to simplify positioning, and an optional auto carry system automatically adjusts blade load during the carry segment. The new Dynamic Inclination Monitor provides readouts of the tractor’s pitch angle and side-to-side slope, and a new operator-presence system locks out the power train and hydraulic system to avoid unintentional machine movement.

Terex

Automatically change crown while paving

Terex Corp. will exhibit its Bid-Well concrete paving equipment – the 4800 bridge paver and 2418 work bridge – at World of Concrete 2012 in Las Vegas this month. With standard paving widths exceeding 170 feet, the 4800 paver display unit will be set to 36 feet wide. A new style fogging system features all poly tubing to increase up-time and individually controlled spray nozzles to direct the fog where it’s needed. A new skewable power crown adjuster enables operators to automatically make changes to the crown when paving bridge decks at the skew angle. Featuring two new Evaporative Emissions (EVAP) compliant gas engines the show machine will display two-leg options available to paving contractors: a swing-leg design for zero-clearance paving; and a pivot-leg design for paving cross slopes of 6 to 8 percent.

Gomaco

Right-side, left-side slipforming

GOMACO Corp.’s new 4400 barrier machine for right-side and left-side slipforming will be at World of Concrete. Built specifically for barrier applications, it features a high-capacity cooling package on the engine. The manufacturer’s proprietary G+ control system makes the machine capable of operating in multiple languages. The 4400’s design concept was built around a left-side and right-side slipforming capable machine with symmetrical steering and minimal set-up changes for switching profiles from side to side. The U-shaped platform, which features vibration insulation and a side to side sliding control console, accommodates right-side and left-side pour and provides a 360-degree view of the entire paving operation.

MB America

Crush rocks, concrete onsite

MB America’s crushers are excavator buckets with an internal hydraulic jaw-crusher system that crushes rocks, concrete and any other hard material onsite, directly into the bucket. The machine also crushes reinforced concrete, returning both clean rebar and crushed material ready for recycling. Because the crusher bucket is used in conjunction with an excavator, it can be used in tight spaces and is easily transported. Four models are available and may be used on an entire range of excavators, from 9 tons and up.
The Boss Snowplow

Plows for UTVs

The Boss Snowplow UTV Plows are now available for a wider selection of popular UTV brands. New brands compatible with the plows include Bobcat, Case IH, Club Car, Honda, Husqvarna and New Holland. These UTV brands join off-road vehicle brands John Deere, Kawasaki, Kubota, and Polaris for the UTV plow lineup. The plows are available in two models, a 6 foot 6 inch Power-V XT and a 6-foot Poly Straight-Blade. The hydraulic pumps on the plows are fully enclosed to protect against corrosion and hydraulic freeze-up for enhanced durability. The hydraulic and electrical system is operated from an in-cab button. A unique sloped-profile undercarriage does not hinder ground clearance or inhibit trail riding when the snowplow is detached.

Doosan Portable Power

Mobile generators for Tier 4 final

Doosan Portable Power has released four new models of its Tier 4 Interim (Tier 4i) mobile generators. The G150, G190, G240 and G325 join the lineup of 10 Doosan models ranging from 25 to 570 kVA. The new models complete Tier 4i development from Doosan Portable Power for products with power ratings greater than 174 horsepower and have been designed for the implementation of Tier 4 Final (Tier 4f) technologies effective in 2014. In addition, Doosan is finalizing the development of new G70, G85 and G125 models to meet the 2012 Tier 4i regulations for the respective power ratings. New G25 and G45 models will meet Tier 4f regulations required in 2013.

Chicago Pneumatic

Handles demanding compact jobs

The Chicago Pneumatic line of seven forward and reversible asphalt plates range in operating weight from 344 pounds to 1,111 pounds, and boast centrifugal forces ranging from 7,875 pounds to 13,488 pounds. With hydraulic steering, the machines are available with gas-powered Honda engines or diesel-driven Hatz engines. The wear-and-tear resistant plates have heavy-duty frames and engine covers that protect vital components. The bottom plates are constructed from wear-resistant Hardox 400 steel with a hardness of 400 HBW. An electric start on the MV480, the heaviest model, boosts efficiency on jobsites.

Caterpillar

High lift capacity, enhanced stability

The Cat PL83 pipelayers replacing the 583T, has a rated lifting capacity of 160,000 pounds – a 14-percent increase over the previous model. The PL87, replacing both 587T and 587R, has a rated lifting capacity of 214,000 pounds, for a 6-percent boost in lifting capacity. Both new models use the Cat C15 ACERT engine, with a net horsepower rating of 310 horsepower in the PL83 and 366 horsepower in the PL87. The increased lifting capacity for the PL83 and PL87 results from undercarriage and counterweight changes. The track roller frame on both machines has been lengthened and the rear idler repositioned, yielding higher lift capacity and enhanced stability when the machines work on slopes.

Worksaver Inc.

Clamp-on snow blades

Worksaver’s new clamp-on snow blades are ideal for compact tractors with non-quick-attach buckets, the manufacturer says. The snow blades are designed to install easily and to remove with a chain and turnbuckle system. The attaching frame slides over the bucket cutting edge and the frame extends under the bucket bottom for complete support of the system. The snow blade features a 3/8-inch by 6-inch cutting edge of 1044 steel and the ability to angle right or left. The clamp-on snow blade is available in 5-foot and 6-foot models.

Atlas Copco

Generator for extreme weather

Increased productivity is the name of the game for Hitachi’s newest large excavators. With the ZX Dash-5 machines, a horsepower boost combines with optimized hydraulics for bigger arm and bucket digging forces – the result being more material moved per gallon of fuel burned, says Hitachi. The second group of Dash-5 machines introduced, the ZX470LC-5, ZX670LC-5 and ZX870LC-5 compete in the 45- to 90-metric-ton range as Tier 4 Interim replacements for the predecessor ZX450LC-3, ZX650LC-3 and ZX850LC-3 models. The cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) technology employed on the Dash-5 excavators uses a diesel oxidation catalyst/diesel particulate filter combo requiring, says Hitachi, no daily attention due to a 4,500-hour service life. Furthermore, a new hydraulically-driven reversible fan for cleaning debris from the radiator screen only runs when needed, thus reducing noise, fuel consumption and operating costs. For the operator’s comfort and productivity: the cab has more side-to-side foot room and a larger door with more glass for visibility to the side; a new multifunction monitor has enhanced diagnostic features including rearview camera display; and an updated light package has two cab lights and one additional boom light.

Road rehab profits slip-sliding away? Here’s a solution to keep costs . . . well . . . in their place. A direct replacement for the cold-mix or “cold patch” technique of securing road plates after a sewer line or road bed repair, the reusable Plate Locks system uses concrete anchors to mechanically fasten the plates to the roadway, thus preventing the sliding that can occur with an adhesion product. Manufactured from a recyclable, safety orange, polypropylene thermoplastic, Plate Locks are available in 5-foot lengths and can be cut to fit any size of plate or configuration of plates. They are placed around the perimeter of the steel road plate, and may be left in place should be the plate need to be removed to allow more work to be done. The technology not only reduces costs for agencies and contractors, says Plate Locks, but also cuts down on work zone accidents and contractor liabilities by consistently marking, identifying and securing the steel plates used on repaired roads and highways.

Expanded line makes it automatic

An automatic transmission in a vocational truck application is no longer a pipedream or even a novelty. In fact, as transmission system suppliers continue to develop and grow their product lines, automatics have become practical, efficient solutions to the personnel and equipment challenges forever faced by truck fleet managers. An expansion to Eaton’s UltraShift PLUS line includes two new vocational platforms, additional application approvals within a multipurpose platform, and a lower torque range for established linehaul products. Both also designed for linehaul vocational use: the newly-released, 10-speed Vocational Active Shifting (VAS) platform is available in models ranging 1,050 to 1,650 foot-pounds, as well as multi-torque; new 13-speed Vocational High Performance (VHP) models range between 1,650 and 2,050 foot-pounds. Additionally, the Multipurpose Extreme Performance (MXP) platform is now approved for logging, mining, oil-field, construction, city delivery, refuse and off-road applications, on top of the original heavy and linehaul uses. Also, Eaton has released lower-torque models of the Vocational Construction Series (VCS) and Vocational Multipurpose Series (VMS) transmissions, specifically 1,050 and 1,250 foot-pound versions. Most recently, Western Star joined fellow truck manufacturers Freightliner, International, Peterbilt, Kenworth and Volvo in offering UltraShift PLUS as an option on specific carrier and engine models.

Dynapac

Rollers tailored to local conditions

The Dynapac CC Line series of eight double-drum and eight combi-tandem asphalt rollers offers sizes and options designed to match contractor needs and work style. The rollers can be tailored to local conditions, including engine power, operator’s platform and air conditioning. Each roller is equipped with the DCA-A Compaction Analyzer that monitors and records key parameters via a GPS-assisted, graphic, real-time display of temperature and number of passes.

The CC224HF, CC234HF, CC324HF, CC334HF, CC384HF, CC424HF, CC524HF and CC624HF are dual-drum models. Combi models – CC224CHF, CC234CHF, CC324CHF, CC334CHF, CC384CHF, CC424CHF, CC524CHF and CC624CHF – feature a drum roller and rear set of wheels. All the CC rollers are engineered to compact any type of asphalt mix and feature high frequency/low amplitude for thin layers and high amplitude for thick layers. The rated power is 125 horsepower at 2,200 rpm for the CC424HF, and 152 horsepower for the larger CC524HF and CC624HF models. The new machines have operating masses ranging from 11.6 to 13.9 tons. The weight is split evenly between the front and rear drum modules.

New Graders Built to Bear Down

It’s difficult to argue when Volvo Construction Equipment says that “what really matters” for grader productivity is blade down pressure and blade pull force. Well, with emphasis on overall machine balance and distribution of the main grader components, the new G900B-Series motor graders have the highest blade down pressure in each weight class, the company claims. Using larger-displacement engines with cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) technology to meet Tier 4 Interim emissions requirements, each of the G930B, G940B, G960B and all-wheel-drive G946B grader models can be driven by either the Volvo HTE840 transmission with eight forward and four reverse gears (standard) or the HTE1160 with 11 forward and six reverse gears. These transmissions boast three and eight power curves, respectively, matching power output to the traction available, and each uses the “shuttle shift” system to move between forward and reverse without the operator needing to stop the machine or use the inching pedal. The four Volvo graders range from 34,520 to 38,709 pounds in operating weight.

Large Excavator E-ases Into Clean Emissions

Its arrival has been anticipated, having been first announced in late 2010, but the 349E’s formal North American release this summer still opens a new chapter in the Caterpillar large-size excavator heritage. Replacing the 345D L, the 349E adopts updated nomenclature to more closely reflect the actual metric tonnage of the machine. Operating on either ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel exclusively or a blend with 20-percent biodiesel, the 396-net-horsepower C13 engine uses Cat’s Clean Emissions Module (CEM) to meet Tier 4 Interim emissions standards. In automatic mode, the CEM regeneration system allows the 349E to work as normal with no interruption to the work cycle, automatically sensing when to regenerate both during idle and when the machine is working. The manual model allows the operator to override the automatic setting if desired. Fuel-saving features introduced on the 349E include one-touch idle control, isochronous speed control, economy power mode and an engine idle setting that allows selection of how long the excavator can idle before it shuts down.

Blue World Crete

Portland cement alternative

Scientists at Blue World Crete discovered Geo-Blue Crete II, a geo-polymer binding agent for cement that serves as a complete low-carbon footprint alternative to Portland cement. It looks like, acts like, works like Portland cement, and can be distributed in the same way with the same equipment but with less-expensive manufacturing costs, according to Blue World Crete. It is a one-part system that requires a simple paddle mixing of its powdered chemical formula at ambient temperatures. No heat is required in its manufacturing process. It is water-retardant, acid-retardant, discourages the oxidation of rebar, and has a near-zero coefficient of expansion.

DuPont

Three herbicide options for land managers

DuPont Perspective, Streamline and Viewpoint herbicides are based on aminocyclopyrachlor, a new proprietary active ingredient from the manufacturer. The herbicides provide long-lasting activity on a wide spectrum of difficult brush and broadleaf weeds in utility rights-of-way, roadsides, railroads, nature preserves, parks and other areas. Low-use rates and dry-blended formulations mean these new herbicides require less handling, tank-mixing, storage space and waste disposal. DuPont Perspective herbicide selectively controls broadleaf and invasive weeds, including thistles, leafy spurge and knapweeds, along roadsides and other sites, while preserving desirable grasses and natural habitats. It also helps control ALS- and glyphosate-tolerant species, including kochia, marestail and pigweeds. DuPont Streamline herbicide controls brush in industrial rights-of-way where desirable native and perennial grasses need to be maintained. It controls tough species, including boxelder, hackberry and mesquite. DuPont Viewpoint herbicide provides broad-spectrum brush control of tough species, including boxelder, hackberry, mesquite, oaks and sweetgum in utility and industrial rights-of-way.

Doosan Infracore Portable Power

Intuitive joystick control

The Doosan Control System (DCS) full-color, digital display panel gives the operator complete control of the air compressors. The control system is available on the new XP825 and HP750e air compressors. DCS uses an intuitive joystick control, and settings can be customized to view only important information related to the application at hand, such as air pressure, compressor speed, pressure regulations, airend temperature and separator tank temperature. The easy-to-read display allows the operator immediate access to preloaded PDF documents of the operator’s manual, service manual and parts manual, through an integrated e-reader library. Full machine status and fault code history are also readily available.

Freightliner

Automated two-pedal shift system

Freightliner Trucks’ AMT3 automated-manual transmission for Business Class M2 vehicles combines the design principles of a manual transmission with intelligent electronics to form an automated two-pedal shift system that equalizes driver performance and improves fuel economy. The AMT3 eliminates the torque converter and instead couples the engine to the transmission with a hydraulically-actuated clutch. This clutch actuation results in minimal torque interrupt during acceleration and shifting, while providing constant lock-up. The Transmission Control Unit’s intelligent shift logic evaluates road, grade and load conditions to perform shifts at optimal engine RPMs.

HCSS

Tracking safety goals

HeavyJob job management software from HCSS allows foremen and project engineers to enter time card information and that an individual has attended a safety meeting. Construction companies use the safety application to track and report all job-level safety information and manage historical safety data for each job in one location. The product also helps the company manage individual employees’ safety compliance, certification and training. A dashboard displays the key indicators of the company’s safety program across all jobs instantly, and alerts management to areas that require immediate attention. An incident management feature simplifies capture, classification and documentation of recordable incidents for company analysis and the OSHA Form 300 log of work-related injuries and illnesses.

SnowEx

Spreader tows with lawn, garden hitch

The SnowEx SP-7000 Tow Pro spreader features a 1.4-cubic-yard capacity and tows behind tractors and UTVs with a lawn and garden hitch, eliminating the need to mount a large spreader in the truck bed. The Tow Pro is said to be ideal for treating parking lots and garages, private roadways and a multitude of other off-highway uses. The spreader can handle all available spreading materials for ice management, such as 100-percent sand, 100-percent salt/ice melt or any combination in-between. The system includes a multi-angled hopper for enhancing material flow to the spreader’s inverted-“V” baffle and patented auger, which then delivers material to a precise spot on the spinner. It also contains an integrated vibrator to reduce clumping and promote consistent feeding. With an 18-inch, stainless steel spinner, the unit is capable of spreading material up to 30 feet wide. For maximum control of the spread pattern, the spinner can be tilted between zero and 15 degrees downward, and the fins can also be adjusted.

Water-resistant, noncorrosive salt storage

The SB-1000 salt box from SnowEx is constructed from water-resistant, noncorrosive polyethylene, has a storage capacity of 10 cubic feet and is designed to protect a wide variety of materials from weather elements. Although the most common use is for storing salt, sand and other spreading materials for ice management, the salt box can also be used for holding fertilizer, tools and anything else that requires a weather-protected enclosure.

Engineered for digging, prying and pushing

The Alpha Series line of compact track loaders from Case delivers 74 horsepower in the TR270 and 90 horsepower in both the TR320 and TV380. Rated operating capacities range from 2,700 to 4,200 pounds with a counterweight and a hinge-pin height, which positions the bucket higher to load trucks quickly and easily. Featuring a dozer-style undercarriage, the track loaders can hold fast on steep slopes and take command of muddy or sandy terrain. Included in the series are two radial-lift models, the TR270 and TR320, and a vertical-lift model, the TV380. The radial lift machines (designated with an R in the model name), are engineered for digging, prying and pushing, while the vertical lift models (designated with a V), are noted for excelling in lift-and-carry applications.

A sign for speed

The Driver Feedback Sign from 3M advises drivers of their speed and encourages speed limit compliance. Built-in radar speed detection combined with an attention-grabbing display specifically designed for use on higher speed roadways produces a traffic calming tool that helps improve road safety. The sign is 48 by 60 inches with a 22-inch speed display and detects vehicles from as far away as 1,500 feet. It alerts motorists to reduce speeds in high-risk areas. The sign includes both amber and red numerals, along with white strobe LED lights, for a highly visible display that gains the attention of oncoming drivers.

Anti-rotation claws keep drums stable

The Lane Changer traffic drum from Work Area Protection has 5-inch-wide anti-rotation claws for use with a tire ring to keep the drums stable and facing traffic to reduce the need for repositioning. The drum is also designed to minimize stacking height and maximize load quantities. The Lane Changer traffic drum meets MUTCD, NCHRP 350, and sheeting configuration requirements for all state specifications, and has been approved in most states. The built-in, 10-inch-wide, anti-roll bottom allows the drum to resist rolling after an impact. The two-piece breakaway feature allows the drum a controlled separation upon impact, while letting the user drag the drum into position without separation. A ribbed bottom lip provides easy base attachment for rubber bases. Recessed reflective tiers provide long-lasting protection of sheeting, and the built-in sheeting edge protector guards against wear during drum stacking and transportation.

‘New generation’ loaders

JCB has introduced seven compact loaders — four wheeled and three tracked — in a range that will eventually grow to 18 models. All seven machines are vertical lift, which allows for increased capacity and more reach at maximum lift height. The models now available — the 260, 280, 300 and 330 wheeled skid steers and 260T, 300T, 320T compact track loaders — are large-platform machines with rated operating capacities of 2,600 pounds and above. With the introduction of the new-generation machines, JCB will be able to offer a complete range of wheeled and tracked machines, both radial and vertical lift, ranging from 1,300 to 3,500 pounds.

Corrosion-resistant ice management

SnowEx, a division of TrynEx International, introduces its SD-95 drop spreader for ice management in confined areas. The spreader delivers a consistent flow of material directly to the ground, which is said to reduce waste and prevent the material from flinging into unwanted locations. The SD-95 includes a corrosion-resistant polyethylene hopper, which has a 160-pound capacity. Designed to handle bagged rock salt and pelletized material, the unit spreads in a 28-inch-wide path. The spreader also features 13-inch-diameter pneumatic tires and an adjustment lever on the handle for changing the material flow quickly and accurately.

Nitrogen gas-assisted operation

When higher accuracy is required to meet company or regulatory standards, field data collected with Juno Series handhelds can be post processed with office software such as Trimble GPS Pathfinder Office or Trimble GPS Analyst ESRI extension that includes Trimble DeltaPhase technology to achieve 1- to 3-meter accuracy.

Entrained, fiber-reinforced deck mix is STRONG

Quikrete Fiber-Reinforced Deck Mix is an air-entrained, normal-setting, fiber-reinforced material designed to repair highways, bridge decks, concrete parking decks, balconies and other concrete surfaces as a patching material for commercial applications. The mix is made from blended cement, alkali-resistant fibers, graded aggregates, internal corrosion inhibitors and additives approved for use in structural concrete. For additional stability, the product is air entrained, meaning billions of microscopic air cells per cubic foot relieve internal pressure on the concrete when water freezes. The mix reaches a compressive strength of 1,800 psi after 24 hours and 6,000 psi in 28 days. One 80-pound bag of the deck mix will yield about 0.6 cubic feet at a thickness from 1/2-inch to 2 feet, according to the manufacturer. The mix is also available in a polymer-modified formulation.

Remote monitoring telematics is standard

Volvo Construction Equipment now includes its remote monitoring telematics system as standard on larger machines (wheel loaders weighing more than 10 tons, excavators more than 12 tons, articulated dump trucks and motor graders) in the U.S. and Canada. These models will come standard-equipped with CareTrack, the Volvo Construction Equipment telematics system, and also with a free three-year CareTrack customer subscription.
Power take-off option

Kenworth Truck Company has introduced a new front engine power take-off (FEPTO) option for the Kenworth T800, which is designed for municipal and vocational fleets that require a front engine PTO for snowplow, dump, mixer, refuse, crane and other applications. The configuration also provides a front-frame extension for applications requiring front-mounted equipment, such as hydraulic rams or hose reels. The truck uses a new hood designed to provide an increase in cooling module size without having to raise the cab height. The grille is mounted to the 1,440-square-inch radiator in a fixed position, allowing the hood to be tilted for daily under-hood inspections and helping prevent the grille from bumping the snowplow, pump or other front frame-mounted equipment. The extended front frame rails are available in sizes of 10-3/4 inches by 3/8 inch, 11-5/8 inches by 3/8-inch and 10-11/16 inches by 1/2-inch, with a 66-inch and 73-inch bumper setting. An optional crankshaft-driven adapter can be ordered to power the front engine PTO driveshaft.

Torque Wrench Pump: Fast and powerful

The Super Velocity Torque Wrench Pump, SV100, from TorcUP offers continuous-speed ratcheting and power torque. An upgrade to the EP1000, the industrial pump integrates a new style of roll cage and different configuration of the gauge setup. The handle of the pump is no longer a part of the shroud, but is now a part of the roll cage. It also features built-in circuitry that allows the user to choose the tool being used on the pump, and it automatically adjusts the timing to be correct specifically for that tool. After this, the tool just needs to be put on the nut, and the pump will continuously advance until the bolt starts to tighten. The pump also knows when to stop by sending the tightening of the bolt, enabling the user to finish the application to achieve proper torque.

An innovative ‘green’ sound barrier

Centria’s Eco Sound Barrier system has received the American Society of Civil Engineer’s Charles Pankow Award for Innovation, an award that “celebrates collaboration in innovative design, materials or construction-related research and development put into practice in a sustainable manner.” The Cradle-to-Cradle-certified road product is a green alternative to traditional sound barriers. The sound barrier is made from 23- percent recycled material and is 100-percent recyclable at the end of its useful life. At 4.25 pounds per square foot, the sound barrier requires fewer trucks to transport it to the jobsite than traditional barriers, which ultimately cuts down on emissions and lowers a project’s carbon footprint. According to Centria, total installed costs for Eco Sound Barrier are less than those of traditional precast barriers.

Thermal water tank for temp maintenance

Vactor Manufacturing now offers the SXP (superlinear XL polyethylene) insulated water tank for the Vactor HXX HydroExcavator. According to the manufacturer, the thermal water tank retains heated water temperature longer, reducing the likelihood of freezing during operation in sub-zero conditions and harsh winter weather. The lighter-weight tank also reduces fuel consumption while increasing payload availability and hauling capacity. The 1,200-gallon-capacity SXP tank features a double wall design consisting of a 3/8-inch-thick outer shell and a 3/8-inch-thick foam liner.

Resin system warns of hazardous turns

Transpo Industries has introduced the T-28 Color-Safe Surface and T-78 Polymer Crack Sealer. The T-28 is an acrylic-based resin system used for pavement area markings and anti-skid surfacing. It is typically used for demarcation of bicycle/pedestrian paths, bus stops/lanes and other specially-designated areas. T-28 Color-Safe Surface enhances skid-resistance, and its color warns travelers of hazardous turns and other high-accident areas on asphalt and concrete roadways. T-78 is a low-viscosity, methyl methacrylate resin system that is highly effective for sealing and filling cracks in concrete. It bonds well to the inner walls of cracks, restoring strength and preventing crack propagation. T-78 Polymer Crack Sealer is capable of rapid cure in a wide range of temperatures. The application process requires minimal labor costs, reducing the need for specialized equipment. Its fast cure time (less than one hour) assures a quick return to service, according to Transpo Industries.

Double-walled fuel tanks

Transcube has added the 100TCG to its line of transportable fuel tanks. The new double-walled tank offers a special total containment design to eliminate the risk of spills and contamination. Providing a capacity of 2,450 gallons, the 100TCG is useful for feeding large portable generators and many other applications that require a larger supply of diesel. The tank is designed with an inner fuel container enclosed within a steel-constructed, weatherproof outer wall that ensures complete integral secondary containment. All fill ports, pumps, fittings and connections are housed within a full height cabinet. The cabinet, which includes a drip collection sump, is completely within the tank’s secondary containment area. The unit includes a PN16 flange for double-walled pipework requirements and is capable of feeding up to two generators while simultaneously fueling equipment with a separate nozzle.

VT LeeBoy showcased its new RW-80A road widener at the 2010 American Public Works Association (APWA) trade show in Boston in late August. The machine will be part of a product line of five road widener and commercial paver products from LeeBoy’s new Blaw-Knox Commercial Paving Products division. Each will carry the Blaw-Knox logo. The brand use is provided through collaboration with Volvo Construction Equipment.

The new RW-80A will be produced at the company’s manufacturing facility in Lincolnton, N.C., and will be distributed via Volvo dealerships during the first quarter of 2011. The machine boasts an 80-horsepower diesel engine with a machine weight in excess of 18,000 pounds. Each unit is provided with an 8-foot strike-off group enabling 6-foot strike-off capability at a 45-degree angle for proper material flow. This model is designed for ease of maneuverability and is shorter than other model offerings such as the RW-100B and RW-195E also built by the Blaw-Knox division of LeeBoy.

Four other models of which the product line is comprised include the RW-100B, RW-195E, PF-150B and the PF-161B. Additional product line expansion is planned.

Further details will be available at www.blawknoxpaving.com, which is expected to be unveiled this month.

Power-dense and refined loaders

Caterpillar says its new B-Series 3 compact loaders – Skid Steer Loader models 216B3, 226B3, 236B3, 242B3 and 252B3 and Multi-Terrain Loader models 247B3 and 257B3 – are more reliable, safer and easier to operate. A larger engine and more powerful hydraulics for the 242B3 and 257B3 make these models “power-dense.” All models include a single electronic control module (ECM) relocated for improved access and reliability, plus new ECM-enabled features. A heavy-duty battery (880 CCA) is now standard equipment on larger models and a redesigned dead-engine lower valve provides a safe exit for the operator if the machine runs out of fuel or the engine stall with the lift arms raised.

Heavy-duty track options for compact trenchers

Ditch Witch now offers a heavy-duty track option for its two-wheel-drive R230 and R300 Zahn compact trenchers. Previously, each unit offered standard air-filled or optional urethane-filled, flat-proof tires. The heavy-duty tracks allow for increased traction on the machines, particularly on uneven and rough terrain. The heavy-duty tracks also let the trenchers to travel across trenches as well as “walk” or oscillate 12 degrees, for greater traction when loading, unloading, and maneuvering over curbs or other rough and uneven terrain. Optional heavy-duty tracks are available for the four-wheel-drive R230 and R300, both of which accept seven different types of front ends.

Durability, accuracy in harsh environments

Topcon Positioning Systems has released its AT-B Series auto levels, which can focus on objects at 7.9 inches in front of the telescope, where previous models provided 1.6 feet or 3.3 feet minimum focusing distance. The compensator of AT-B Series incorporates four suspension wires made of high-tensile metal that features minimal thermal expansion coefficient, which Topcon says provides durability and accuracy even in harsh environmental conditions. The system also features a finely-tuned magnetic damping system that levels and stabilizes the line of sight despite fine vibrations.

Capture high-resolution position info

Trimble has enhanced its Trimble FX 3D Laser Scanner for applications requiring high-accuracy and high-quality data with the range to capture high-resolution position information up to 80 meters, allowing more data capture from each setup. The laser scanning solution can be used for, among other things: capturing existing condition data; ensuring existing condition data; ensuring dimensions of high-tolerance fabricated parts prior to transportation and installation; verifying as-built construction; visualizing real-world conditions; monitoring plant assets and potential movement or deformation during use; and planning retrofit construction projects based upon highly-accurate data.

High-performance separator curb

Tuff Curb from Impact Recovery Systems is a durable, high-performance separator curb that works, in conjunction with Impact Recovery Systems full line of spring-mounted posts and signage. This versatile curbing system is easy to install and can be utilized for curves, medians, edge lines, work zones and rail crossings.
The new GR10 from Leica Geosystems is designed for a variety of GNSS reference station applications. A plug-and-play setup using a unique receiver hostname and DHCP support means no pre-configuration of an IP address. Key status information is available on every page. System monitor tools, system backup and restore, configuration wizards and comprehensive online help, tool tips and multiple language support make the GR10 easy to manage and maintain, says Leica. The Active Assist feature allows authorized access to the GR10, even if the receiver is behind a firewall.

Direct application guardrail striping

The new “Jersey” barrier and guardrail paint striping system from EZ-Liner Industries provides a continuous reflective stripe that can be directly applied to existing barriers or guard rails for increased safety in dangerous curves, entrance and exit ramps, low light areas, and work zones. Used in conjunction with Diamond Vogel’s formulated horizontally-applied paint and beads, the system dramatically reduces nighttime accidents, according to EZ-Liner.

Stainless salt and sand spreaders

Hiniker Company’s snow and ice control product line includes two stainless steel salt and sand spreaders, the 6.5-foot model 625 and the 8-foot model 825. Standard hopper capacities are 1.8 cubic yards in the 825 model and 1.5 cubic yards in the 625 model. The swing-away spinner chute allows for easier unloading and improved trailer hitch access, according to the manufacturer. The spreader features a Briggs & Stratton Intek OHV air-cooled, single cylinder, four-cycle engine. An in-cab control console operates the electric starter, clutch, and throttle functions. Available options include hopper screens, tie-down kits, and a high-mount brake light.

The HiVis IronClad boots from Rocky Boots uses the same reflective features used on road sign, and the leather treatment makes the boots extremely sensitive to light, to provide safety for those working in low light or dark conditions. The heel and vamp appear to be standard leather during the day, but when the HiVis retroreflective leather is illuminated, bright light is directed back toward the viewer. The boots have guaranteed waterproof construction; extra durable-ribbed tempered steel shank; lightweight, shock-absorbing and flexible EVA midsole; optional steel protective toe; an air-port vented polyurethane cushion footbed; and seven-layer slip and oil resistant outsole.

Ready-to-use lithium densifier

Liquid-Hard Ultra lithium concrete densifier and chemical hardener is a ready-to-use, colorless liquid, which hardens and dustproofs concrete at a molecular level. As it is applied and penetrates into the concrete surface, a chemical reaction takes place, producing a byproduct that fills in the pores of the concrete one molecule at a time. The hardener then solidifies the concrete to eliminate dusting and pitting. The product is simply sprayed on and then brushed into the surface using a microfiber mop.

Watch the road while measuring

FastMeasure by KTP Enterprise has released the FastMeasure Qua, its newest distance measuring device that allows the user to measure four lines at once while driving at highway speeds.
