Anthony Foxx has been sworn in as the new U.S. Secretary of Transportation, the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) announced today.

Judge Nathaniel Jones swore in Foxx at 11 a.m. today during a private ceremony at the USDOT headquarters in Washington, D.C. Foxx invited Jones, who he worked for as a law clerk after law school, to administer the oath of office. The Bible that Jones used for the oath belonged to Foxx’s great-grandparents.

Foxx’s wife, Samara, and their two children, Hillary and Zachary, also attended the ceremony.

In a written message to USDOT employees, Foxx said he would continue to focus on safety.

“Safety will remain our top priority at DOT,” Foxx said. “At the same time, I will work to improve the efficiency and performance of our current transportation system while building the infrastructure we need for future generations.”

According to USDOT, Foxx will spend his first full day as Transportation Secretary meeting employees and holding meetings on issues such as transportation safety and severe weather preparedness.
