The order books are open and they’re coming down the assembly lines as we speak: the 2013 Chevy Silverado HD and GMC Sierra 2500 HD bi-fuel pickup trucks.

The Vortec 6.0L engines in these trucks will run on gasoline or compressed natural gas and can switch between the two seamlessly without affecting performance. With the combined fuel of both systems the trucks boast a range of 650 miles.

The bi-fuel option ads $11,000 to the sticker price, but with CNG running $1.60 to $2 cheaper than gasoline you can recoup that eventually (at about 120,000 miles, assuming 20 mpg). After that it’s $2 per gallon cash back in your pocket. If gas or diesel goes higher your payoff comes quicker and the payback gets better.

CNG is reported to run much cleaner, with less soot, longer intervals between oil changes, and probably longer engine life; and if you care, it cuts greenhouse gas emissions by better than 40 percent compared to gas or diesel.

Speaker officially unveiled the latest addition to its extensive line of LED lights today. Dubbed the “XL” line, this new family of heavy duty LED products was developed specifically for extreme industrial conditions. Each lamp is fully sealed and complies with IP69K standards for high pressure washing and other harsh environmental factors.

“J.W. Speaker’s LED worklights and strobes have long been a favorite among heavy duty equipment operators, but applications utilizing power washers for cleaning their equipment required a higher level of ingress protection. This need was the primary driver behind the development of the XL Line,” said Gary Durian, Director of Engineering for J.W. Speaker. All of the XL products feature a distinctive, bright yellow die-cast housing and fully sealed connections – making them perfect for applications where water, mud, and sludge are present. According to Ryan Mayrand, Product Marketing for J.W. Speaker, “The fact that these products are LED means they’re more resistant to shock & vibration, use significantly less power, and last up to 50 times longer than bulb-based lights. All of this equates to longer service life, higher reliability, and lower operational costs for our end users. We even offer a 4-year limited warranty on all of the XL products.”

The XL Line includes heavier duty versions of many top sellers, including:

Doug Hogue, P.E., of VSS Macropaver, took time yesterday to talk with me at the American Public Works Association (APWA) 2012 in Anaheim, Calif., about the company’s VSS Slurry Transfer Vehicle.

The SVT uses the technology of the Material Transfer Vehicles (MVTs) that is already used in the road construction industry and applies it to road maintenance. What stands out is the vehicle’s ability to run continuously and without creating seams. It can also be used with all major brands of truck-mounted slurry machine. This SVT is designed to work with all major brands of Truck Mounted Slurry Machines, Hogue says.

With the ability of loading aggregate at 8 tons/minute and both water and emulsion at 200 gallons/minute, the STV allows the Paver to work uninterrupted while applying slurry or microsurfacing. The aggregate is fed into the STV receiving hopper from a conveyor equipped nurse unit. The upper section of the STV conveyor folds for transport. The emulsion and water are fed into the STV via a hose from the nurse unit tank using separate hydraulically driven 3-inch self-priming centrifugal pumps.

Minor fit-up requirements enable truck-mounted slurry machines into a versatile continuous or standard slurry machine.

For a video with Hogue explaining the VST in detail, check out this video I took at the APWA 2012 show, click here.

John Deere is adding four models to the K-Series crawler dozer line, providing contractors an emissions-certified machine that affords higher productivity, increased uptime and lower daily operating costs in earth moving and grading applications. The 550K, 650K, 700K and 750K crawler dozers build off the popular and successful 850K that launched in 2011.

“We’re excited to add four efficient and productive crawler dozer models to the John Deere line-up,” said Jon Gilbeck, global product marketing manager for crawler dozers, John Deere Construction & Forestry. “Our customers wanted an IT4 engine, a quieter and more comfortable cab and the unsurpassed operating ease and maneuverability they have come to expect from John Deere. With the success of the 850K, we only thought it was logical to expand the K-Series’ offerings.”

A John Deere PowerTech 6.8-L (700K, 750K) or 4.5L (550K, 650K) IT4 diesel engine provides an increase in horsepower from the previous J-Series, along with increases in overall tractor weight, resulting in more productive machines. The horsepower ranges include: 85 hp (550K), 101 hp (650K), 125 hp (700K), and 155-165 hp (750K) at 1,800 RPM.

The K-Series uses cooled EGR technology with exhaust filters, Deere’s simple, fuel efficient, field proven and fully integrated solution to meet 2012 EPA emissions regulations. The engine’s diesel particulate filters are cleaned automatically during routine operation, eliminating the need to idle down for maintenance and increasing overall machine productivity. In addition, filter access is easy, should it need servicing.

The John Deere IT4 engine also offers operation on slopes up to 45 degrees while maintaining adequate oil flow to machine systems. A hydraulically driven cool-on-demand fan operates only as needed, decreases cab and bystander noise levels, and cuts fuel consumption. A reversing feature is standard for the 750K and optional for the 550K, 650K, and 700K to blow out debris.

Both the 700K and 750K come equipped with John Deere’s exclusive V-Cool package. This system isolates coolers from dust and engine heat for increased efficiency and durability. In addition, the V-Cool is positioned behind the heavy-duty grille and fan, making the coolers less vulnerable to the rigors of the worksite.

The four new crawler models come equipped with hydrostatic transmissions, a feature John Deere pioneered in crawler dozers in North America in 1976. These transmissions provide customers infinite speed control, power management, live power turns, counter rotation while staying in gear, and dynamic braking. In addition, Total Machine Control allows customized machine response that can be tailored to meet the needs of individual operators.

Inside the cab, operators will find increased comfort thanks to quieter operation, larger access doors, and a standard air suspension seat. Sound dampening in the cab reduces noise levels up to a 50-percent on the 550K and 650K. Best-in-class visibility to the blade and jobsite is provided via ample glass and well-positioned in-cab components. The models also feature a sealed switch model (SSM) with keyless start and a coded-security start feature, a 12-volt electrical accessory outlet and an integrated grade control monitor.

Onboard diagnostics include a standard display monitor that provides real time values for every temperature, pressure, and speed sensor on the machine. The crawler dozers constantly monitor transmission temperature to avoid damage to the hydrostat system. If the transmission temperature is too cold or too hot, the associated light on the monitor will illuminate.

For those fleet managers, owners or operators looking to get the most out of their equipment, the JDLink Ultimate system continuously collects and transmits machine data for machine management via mobile phone technology. The system enables the preventive maintenance and remote diagnostics of crawler dozers, as well as the tracking of machines working on multiple jobsites. John Deere provides customers with the tools to optimize their dozer’s performance.

Caterpillar Work Tools B.V. has introduced its new line of P200-series pulverizers for hydraulic excavators. The P200-series, model P215, P225, and P235 extend the range of hydro-mechanical work tools.

“The new line of pulverizers is yet another advancement as we continually expand and enhance our portfolio of solutions to offer more effective and efficient attachments to a broader range of contractors, says David Becktel, commercial manager of Caterpillar Work Tools, in a press statement issued at Bauma 2010. “We continually seek opportunities to respond to customers’ needs and are fully committed to being a reliable, global supplier and technology leader.”

Ideal for pulverizing from non-fixed structures
The P200 series works well as an option for recyclers who need to prepare concrete for fine crushing and is an excellent attachment for secondary demolition. Concrete chunks released during the demolition of concrete structures can be fine-crushed at source. In this process the concrete and the reinforcement are separated. This considerably reduces the transport volume, saving dumping and transportation expenses.

Innovative jaw arrangement
The P200 series offers wide jaws with pick-up tips, large opening, reversible cutting edges and fast closing times that bring a high return on your investment. This high force-to-weight work tool has been specially developed to reduce the largest possible amount of concrete in the shortest possible time.

Enhanced performance
The hydraulic concrete pulverizer is a highly productive pulverizer. The ripper tooth splits concrete instantly and the large number of crusher teeth have a large pulverizing effect. The cylinder of the P200 series is equipped with a speed valve as standard. This device controls the speed of the cylinder and enables to cut/pulverize with great force in short cycle times.

With a mounting bracket this tool can be exchanged among several carriers and in combination with the dedicated CW quick coupler a swap between other Cat work tools can happen in a matter of seconds.

Optimized serviceability
Service and repairs are necessary part of operating any work tool. So the less time and money needed for both, the better. That’s why Caterpillar gives major attention to reducing both. The teeth and blades are replaceable and the hydraulics are easily accessible through bolted hatches. Parts commonality is designed into the P200 products to significantly benefit owners of several work tools.

At Bauma 2010, Atlas Copco introduced three new heavy-hydraulic breaker models with PowerAdapt and optimized power-to-weight ratio.

The HB 2000 — with its service weight of 2000 kg – offers 10-percent more power than its predecessor, the HB 200. The new HB 3100 and HB 4700 with a service weight of 3100 and 4700 kg, respectively, deliver 5 percent and 13 percent more power than their predecessor models.

In doing so, Atlas Copco sticks to the principle of developing and building attachments offering an improved power-to-weight ratio. The same performance can be achieved with a smaller attachment and carrier unit. Investment and maintenance costs are reduced. More power also means a higher strain against which the attachments are protected by proven and new product features.

All three hydraulic breakers are equipped with the PowerAdapt system which shuts down the breaker in case the oil pressure is too high.

Torsten Treger, product line manager medium & heavy breakers for Atlas Copco, says this feature is particularly useful when the hydraulic breaker is used on different carrier units.

“Hydraulic breakers can generally be hydraulically overloaded if the carrier’s oil pressure has the wrong setting,” Treger says in a written statement. “In order to ensure that our customers can make full use of the equipment in terms of efficiency and power, we have equipped the entire range of heavy-duty hydraulic breakers with PowerAdapt.”

With an improper carrier oil pressure setting, conventional pressure relief valves as the ones frequently used in hydraulic breakers continuously drain oil into the tank and therefore waste precious energy. This affects the efficiency and profitability of the equipment.

The improved guide system of the hydraulic breakers provides a better stability and resistance.

“After all hydraulic breakers are subject to tough operating conditions,“ Treger adds in the press release. “A new retaining bar provides a better protection especially in the lower part of the hydraulic breaker which has to take a lot of wear and tear. The service window and the recesses for the lateral slewing screw couplings have been reinforced. The Non-Dust version of the three new breaker models are furnished with the all-round wear protection which all of the dust versions of the HB series of hydraulic breakers already feature.”

All proven features of Atlas Copco’s heavy-duty hydraulic breaker line are also found in the three new models: the VibroSilenced System to protect operators against noise and vibrations, AutoControl to adapt the blow frequency and impact energy to the rock hardness as well as the integrated automatic lubrication system ContiLube II. With StartSelect the operator can influence the starting and shutdown behaviour of the hydraulic breaker. And with the optional DustProtector the hydraulic breaker is protected against dust and rock particles penetrating the lower breaker part.
